La Chute: The Custom Honda SS50

 

The Custom Honda SS50, by George Woodman, aptly named La Chute is a stylish little bike intended for the Punk’s Peak Festival in France.  The event was cancelled due to fog conditions, but the bike lives on and is quite a work of art.  Check out the Birch multi-ply wood and Paulownia on the front and tail section.  Exquisite! 



Adirondack Motorcycle Camping Trip

Armed with snacks, wallet, sunglasses and helmet, I was ready to tackle a long weekend vacation with my dad.  A father/daughter motorcycle trip to Paul Smith's College in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.  The blue skies would seemingly go on forever, only ever disrupted by a rainstorm now and then.  Lakes speckled all through the region and dotting the topo maps we really didn't even need to carry.  A hike up St. Regis Mountain and a canoe paddle in Lower St. Regis Lake are all you really need to reset and unwind.  

We logged nearly 850 miles on the Harley Davidson bikes we rode.  My dad brought along his Ultra Classic and I rented a Dynaglide since my 400 Yamaha was not in perfect shape.  The Dynaglide was actually a great bike with a ton of power.  The windshield had to go after the first 200mi, so we strapped it onto my dad's bike as to not limit my "coolness factor."  

We drank a lot of crappy beer (i.e. Molson and Labatt), but it was still great.  I caught a fish and reeled in even more sea weed.  It's some of the most pristine nature you could ever imagine.  A world that you find hard to believe is only a 7 hour drive from Philly.  Long, but worth it.  The longer the better when you have the wind in your face and two wheels on the ground.  Ride on

American Swedish Museum Presents "Indian Nation: Indian Motorcycles and America"

Hi Philadelphia friends or folks in the area!  If you have not heard already, the American Swedish Museum has a special exhibition on Indian Motorcycles.  The American Swedish Museum is the oldest Swedish Museum in the United States and it is right here in South Philadelphia!  The exhibition, "Indian Nation: Indian Motorcycles and America," features 12 rare bikes, parts, and history about the company's roots and key innovations.

Oscar Hedstrom, a Swedish immigrant, was the mastermind behind the first American motorcycle, the Indian, and co-founded the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company in 1901 with partner George Hendee.

If you are in the area I suggest you check out the exhibition.  It runs through the summer.

Batavus Moped #tbt

The crazy thing is that I actually remember the day this was taken..oh some 20 years ago.  The first time I ripped around on two wheels leaving the sweet smell of burned gasoline in my wake.  This was a pretty neat Batavus moped my dad had for a short time one summer.  He went and sold it for $50 to a kid down the street at the end of the season.  After a little research I'm almost certain this was a 1983 Batavus Gold  equipped with a 48 cc Laura Engine.  

Analog Motorcycles - 1975 DUCATI GT860 "Super Scrambler Ducati"

Analog Motorcycles built a gnarly scrambler that I can't help but book mark.  The Super Scrambler Ducati has been pieced together using a Triumph Tiger front end and CB550 rotors.  The customizations on the bike are insane!  Check out Analog Motorcycles.  Also, their instagram feed is killer.

Grifter Company: The Bandoleros

Committed to bringing you quality, American made gloves Grifter Company sought out the experts in Gloversville, NY to bring an idea to life.  The Bandoleros gloves are a mix of bison leather and Mexican serape designed fabric.  One of a kind and tough as nails.  $69-available here.  I'll take a pair in medium, thank you ;)

I've always loved the Triumph Bonneville.  Ever since I first saw one as a teenager, the classic look had me.  I really like this humble job by Mule Motorcycles.  They took a 2007 Triumph Bonneville T100 and gave it a little face lift.  A new tracker-style seat, forks, exhaust and some mammoth track tires on there.  They lost the clunky original fenders and lowered the bike a little.  I like these modifications because they aren't over the top.  It still looks like a Triumph and has all of the original appeal, just a bit beefier.  Something I did with my bike.

Moto Update

Last Sunday was an exceptionally beautiful day, perfect for riding.  A little crisp, but tons of sunshine.  Gloves felt just right, jacket properly zipped and snug feeling.

Current state of the moto: running but not perfect.  Anyone that owns a bike that's 30+ years knows the struggle.  She has come a long way, check out an older picture here.

BRC Motorcycle Course

It's been quiet over here on this corner of the web lately, sorry!  I've been so busy with finals, work, and most recently--acquiring my motorcycle license.  I took the 4-day (two indoor, two outdoor) Basic Rider Course.  I've been riding since I was a kid and have always felt super confident on a bike.  I'll admit, the course taught me a thing or two.  I highly suggest taking the course rather than just testing out for your license.  It's really worth-while and you get to tool around on some of the funniest bikes I've every seen.
